GIRL ONE AND THE GREASE GUNS - Driving Without Headlights (Once Again) (7" vinyl) (Squirrel)
1. Driving Without Headlights (Once Again)
2. (I'm A) Willing Receiver
Who are Girl One And The Grease Guns ? The names on the 7" sleeve simply say they're Sissy Space Echo, Warren Betamax, Charles Bronson Burner and Bruce LeeFax. What they play in the band doesn't really matter, but even the quickest listen to what is held within the grooves of this jet black slab of wax will reveal Sissy Space Echo is certainly the vocalist, at the very least. The names are great, the music is even better.
Driving Without Headlights (Once Again) is pure hook laden POP!! It wouldn't be out of place on The Human League's Dare album, Yazoo's Upstairs At Eric's, or Depeche Mode's Speak And Spell. Chugging along with a catchy keyboard riff, this one will get in your head and remain there.
The flipside, (I'm A) Willing Receiver is something a little different. We're still in pop territory here, but it's not as straightforward as all that. Powered along on a drumbeat that is somewhat reminiscent of the classic single Warm Leatherette by The Normal, and with strange sounds and deliberately skewed vocals throughout, the whole thing explodes at the end in a cacophony of noise the likes of which we haven't heard around these parts since the days of The Manhattan Love Suicides.
Recorded in the bleak winter of 2012 at The Glass Factory (a freezing cold structure in the middle of a timber yard) the music definitely sounds suitable for an environment such as that one. With a whole bunch of tracks just ready to record, you'll be hearing more from Girl One And The Grease Guns this year. What will come next from them, who knows ? But as the old cliche goes... expect the unexpected.
